『 Nomadic Architecture 』
Another gift for the algorithm: This youtube channel shows how nomadic structures are built in different parts of the world. I pass the time watching these as another form of ASMR~ autonomous-structural-monument-response?
The fabrication process, ingenuity and aesthetic of these structures is inspiring. In the video above, I enjoyed how the interior is assembled in concert with the framing. My favorite part of the below video on Kyrgyz yurts is how they make felt as insulation and craft them into beautiful designs.
Perhaps it’s because of a very nomadic year that I’ve taken a liking to watching these expert assemblages of home. I’ve moved 25 times in life, so impermanence is a habit. It can be a gentle signal or it can be a five alarm fire that blazes us into gear because we’ve missed the signs. It’s kind of fun to not know what’s next. And also not fun. Sometimes it sucks, but I try to remember this is just a phase of untethering until the right wave leads to shore.
This year, 10 homes have stationed me and my suitcase sanctuary. Unpacking/packing a portable studio, modular wardrobe and small gifts for people and for the land. I’ve learned so much…most importantly, how to be held. Giving is second nature, a much more comfortable place to be. Recieving care and kindness from others is something else though. I want to learn and love people in their host state. I also want people to learn & love me in a guest state. And when I’m ready to move on, I quietly pack it up, leave a little gift of thanks and catch a ride with the wind.
