⁂̊⁑̥⍋ MAS x MERRY ⁑̥⁂̊⍋
Welcome to my first holiday tree ever!
I grew up in the suburbs of America’s lesser known cities, where neighborhoods congregate to plan miles-long light displays and take turns hosting gift drives for those in need. While I don’t celebrate the “major” holidays, I wanted to do something special this year. Like go to Michael’s five days before Christmas and gather left-over discounted items for a celebratory plastic garden, forget wrapping paper, then go to the Dollar Tree for remaining miscellaneous items.1
I got lucky in the seasonal display aisles at Michael’s. I found cute beaded and felted initial ornaments for my family members, a small portable tree, and the last remaining glass ornament which…just could not be any more fitting.
The beautiful thing about this time of year is that there are so many secret rituals and myths associated with the trees and lights and gifting of this time. From the ancient Egyptian origins of Christmas mythology to the Roman practice of gifting Saturn, god of agriculture, in the hopes of receiving bounty and good fortune.2
At a time of great divisiveness, it feels good to just DIVE in and melt into the crowd. Knowing that all these ornamentations have been creatively used to tell so many stories throughout thousands of years, why not make up my own?
So that’s what these next few days are about, writing a new holiday story. Thanks for sharing in this moment, I am very giddy right now ♥
Plot twist, a couple weeks ago Dollar Tree officially raised their prices to $1.25 permanently after 35 years.
